What happens when Smallville<\/a><\/em> leaves small-town life behind for the bright lights of Metropolis? Or when the boy of Boy Meets World<\/a><\/em> grows up to be an adult man who\u2019s walking down aisle? These are the curious cases of television shows that outgrow their titles, and TV buffs are citing examples of the phenomenon on Reddit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.<\/a><\/em> was about, well, agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But then S.H.I.E.L.D. is disbanded, so the characters aren\u2019t actually agents of anything,\u201d user AporiaParadox said, recalling one of the first Marvel TV shows.<\/p>\n

User jrm1693, meanwhile, named New Girl<\/a><\/em> as an example, explaining that by that sitcom\u2019s second season, Zooey Deschanel<\/a>\u2019s character \u201cisn\u2019t really the new girl but an integral part of the friendship group in the loft.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aardvarkyardwork said The Rookie<\/a><\/em> fits the bill, adding, \u201cCan\u2019t be a rookie for seven seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Paddijaddi observed that \u201cit doesn\u2019t take long for The 100<\/a><\/em> to fill that [criterion],\u201d given that show\u2019s many deaths<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rnilf suggested Veep<\/a><\/em>, writing that Julia Louis-Dreyfus<\/a>\u2019 character wasn\u2019t vice president in the later seasons but \u201ccertainly had the hilariously desperate vibe of a veep the entire time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Efficient_Paper brought up the case of Cougar Town<\/a><\/em>, a title the show\u2019s creator and cast lived to regret. \u201c[It] stopped being about Courteney Cox\u2019s character dating younger men about six or seven episodes into the show\u2019s six-seasons run,\u201d that Reddit user wrote. \u201cAt some point they thought about changing the name of the show, but they chose to have jokes about it in the intro instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

And other Reddit users cited Extras<\/a><\/em>, in which Ricky Gervais<\/a>\u2019 character graduates from extra to top-billed TV star, and Jane the Virgin<\/a><\/em>, in which Gina Rodriguez<\/a>\u2019s protagonist eventually has sex.<\/p>\n

The website TV Tropes has many more examples of what it calls the \u201cArtifact Title.\u201d<\/a> For example, several of Desperate Housewives<\/a><\/em>\u2019 characters become divorc\u00e9es with jobs outside of the house, Homeland<\/a><\/em>\u2019s plot ventures overseas, and The Nanny<\/a><\/em> ends up leaving her nanny work behind.<\/p>\n

As both AporiaParadox and TV Tropes note, however, the 1980s British sitcom Yes Minister<\/a><\/em> averted the \u201cArtifact Title\u201d phenomenon by rebranding as Yes, Prime Minister<\/a><\/em> after Jim Hacker (Paul Eddington<\/a>) gets a promotion from minister of the Department of Administrative Affairs to prime minister of the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
