The move comes after multiple statements by the president along the campaign trail saying he would not do so if his son is convicted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Biden released a statement Sunday arguing that the charges were &#8220;instigated&#8221; by the president&#8217;s<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">political opponents in Congress<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter,&#8221; Biden said in a statement Sunday. &#8220;From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department&#8217;s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hunter Biden&#8217;s plea agreement with the Department of Justice fell apart at the last minute earlier this year as some lawmakers called it a sweetheart deal and special treatment for the president&#8217;s son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Biden argued that his son, Hunter, was unfairly treated for political reasons, justifying the pardon. Biden had frequently dismissed media questions about his son and whether he would pardon him, outright\u00a0<\/span><strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_7c3b9ec0-243d-11ef-9af8-df548f845e4d.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">saying earlier this year<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that he would not pardon his son if convicted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Without aggravating factors like use in a crime, multiple purchases, or buying a weapon as a straw purchaser, people<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">almost never<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">brought<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to trial on felony charges solely for how they filled out a gun form,&#8221; Biden said.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Those who were late paying their taxes because of serious<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">addictions,<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">but paid them back subsequently with interest and<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">penalties,<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are typically given non-criminal resolutions.<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It is clear that Hunter<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was treated<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">differently.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lawmakers in Congress<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and IRS whistleblowers have argued the opposite, saying Hunter Biden was given\u00a0<\/span><strong><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/national\/article_51a38d52-2660-11ee-933d-d7b17a3b7447.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">preferential treatment<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0by federal investigators because of his father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The news comes after federal prosecutors telegraphed their intention to drop the charges against President-elect Donald Trump, complying with a long-standing Department of Justice policy<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to not prosecute a sitting president<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0also alleges<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">his investigation found that Hunter was part of the Biden family business, which raked in tens of millions of dollars from entities in countries like China and Ukraine using the &#8220;Biden brand.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So far, that investigation has not led to any federal charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;For my entire<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">career<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth. They&#8217;ll be fair-minded,&#8221; Joe Biden said. &#8220;Here&#8217;s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it led to a miscarriage of justice \u2013 and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further.
