{"id":426626,"date":"2024-12-03T11:39:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-03T11:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=426626"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"GOP-governors-warn-of-ag-challenges-if-new-farm-bill-not-passed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/GOP-governors-warn-of-ag-challenges-if-new-farm-bill-not-passed\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP governors warn of ag challenges if new farm bill not passed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><span>(The Center Square) \u2013\u00a0<\/span>A group of Republican governors has<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">joined together in<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a letter to key congressional leaders and agricultural policymakers<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that warns that<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">delayed reforms and inflationary pressures are pushing farmers to a breaking point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The letter, signed by 17 U.S. governors, addresses the issues the agriculture industry has faced over recent years, pointing to inflation-driven fuel, fertilizer and feed cost spikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Farm Bill is a vital piece of U.S. legislation that is renewed every five years and addresses a broad range of agricultural and nutrition policies, including crop insurance, disaster insurance, conservation programs, and food aid.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 Farm Bill was not extended after Sept. 30, 2024, potentially affecting programs such as nutrition and conservation, among other agricultural programs due to the end of the fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>As the 2023 Farm Bill version remains unresolved, Congress is considering a one-year extension to the 2018 Farm Bill.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rga.org\/joint-ag-letter\/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=12\/2\/24%20%20AM:&amp;utm_term=Punchbowl%20AM%20and%20Active%20Subscribers%20from%20Memberful%20Combined\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>letter reiterates<\/strong><\/span><\/a> that another extension to the 2018 Farm Bill will leave farmers working under an outdated plan as they continue to face evolving changes, stating, &#8220;Domestic agricultural production is a matter of national security. If a country can&#8217;t feed itself, fuel itself, or fight for itself, then it cannot survive. It is imperative that the United States not become dependent on other countries for our food supply, while we have the best farmers and ranchers in the world right in our backyards.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">House Republicans previously rejected a <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.senate.gov\/newsroom\/dem\/press\/release\/chairwoman-stabenow-unveils-the-rural-prosperity-and-food-security-act\" target=\"_blank\">1,400-page Farm Bill<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>proposed<\/span>\u00a0last month by U.S. Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow, D-MI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Stabenow called for more significant investment in climate resilience and food security programs, stating that her bill would keep &#8220;Farmers Farming, families fed, and rural communities strong.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">U.S. Sen.
