Throughout his exceptionally prodigious career,<\/span> Morgan Freeman<\/span><\/a> has been very selective about the small screen. Though TV fans have seen him in some memorable recurring roles in serial dramas like<\/span> Another World<\/span><\/em>,<\/span> The Twilight Zone<\/span><\/em>, and<\/span> Madam Secretary<\/span><\/em>, those have been few and far between, and he\u2019s certainly never been a regular cast member on any television series \u2026 until now, that is.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the second season of<\/span> Lioness<\/span><\/em><\/a> (formerly,<\/span> Special Ops: Lioness<\/span><\/em>), the Academy Award-winning actor was elevated to series regular for the first time in his industrious career, and the entire reason he decided to commit to this gig was simple enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTaylor Sheridan<\/a>,\u201d he told TV Insider when asked about his choice to join the show. \u201cI\u2019m so enamored of him and his work. He\u2019s so prolific, and it\u2019s always good.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Freeman, Sheridan approached him with the role as an offer he simply could not refuse in Season 1: \u201cI was cast by him to play the role that he wrote. So it\u2019s almost as if he\u2019s saying to me, \u2018I wrote this for you,\u2019 which is flattering in and of itself,\u201d Freeman remembered. \u201cAfter that, there\u2019s nothing like putting on a pair of comfortable shoes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also a first for Freeman that his character, Edwin Mullins, happens to be the secretary of state for the U.S., but he\u2019s used to portraying high-ranking government officials (he\u2019s previously portrayed a president, chief justice, and speaker of the house, to name a few). Luckily for Freeman, his process is exactly the same for all of them. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t differ. My preparation is the same as always: Read the script and know how you fit in and then learn their lines. So simple.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Freeman has a high regard for what his character has to do as a global diplomat. \u201cDiplomats have one serious task and that is putting out political fires damping down, trying to ameliorate disagreements. And so I think sometimes, as such, you have to learn to tap dance, using discretion,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is going to hot spots where it is your task to try and settle differences: \u2018Let\u2019s not get too upset with each other here. Let\u2019s sit and talk.\u2019 And in the situation that I\u2019m in here where I\u2019m secretary of state relying on a bunch of killers, that\u2019s political dynamite. So I handle with care. \u2018Let\u2019s not go off half-cocked anywhere and do something we are all gonna be very sorry for.’\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
