As TV Insider covered last week, <em>TPIR<\/em> viewers think 3 Strikes is \u201ctoo hard,\u201d \u201cnot fun,\u201d and even \u201cthe \u2018f*** you contestant, you\u2019re not getting a car\u2019 game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If 3 Strikes is put out to pasture, it\u2019ll join the games below, all of which left the <em>Price Is Right<\/em> rotation while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/bob-barker\/\">Bob Barker<\/a> was still hosting the game show. Scroll down to learn about those challenges \u2014 and to read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ThePriceIsRight\/comments\/19fc5h6\/retired_games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit users\u2019 commentary on the gameplay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Add \u2019Em Up<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>To win a new car in Add \u2019Em Up, a contestant had to guess the car\u2019s price tag, which always had four non-repeating digits. Bob Barker would show the contestant the sum of those digits and would give the contestant one free digit of their choosing. The contestant could pick the remaining digits in any order, and they were allowed to make one mistake.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Price is Right - Add &#039;Em Up playing (1987)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W_O7c6iipoI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Add \u2019Em Up involved too much math for the average contestant and was too complicated to explain,\u201d Reddit user bluegambit875 wrote. Jcs290 agreed, saying, \u201cExcited and nervous contestants shouldn\u2019t be asked to solve an algebra problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h2>Bullseye I<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Not to be confused with <em>The Price Is Right<\/em>\u2019s current Bullseye game, Bullseye I gave contestants seven bids to guess the exact price of a car, with Barker telling them \u201chigher\u201d or \u201clower\u201d after each attempt. According to <em>TPIR<\/em> lore, no one ever won the game, though Jeannie comes awfully close in this YouTube clip.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wow, Bullseye Was So Hard Back in the Day on The Price Is Right | The Price Is Right 1972\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HifBNA7zRqA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On Reddit, user 42069CakeDay argued that the original Bullseye shouldn\u2019t have been scrapped. \u201cGuessing the price is not <em>that<\/em> hard,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Hit Me<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>In this riff on the casino game blackjack, contestants had to get their hand of cards to total a sum as close to 21 as possible \u2014 or, at least, closer than the sum of the house cards \u2014 without going over. To draw cards, they had to identify the multiplier between items\u2019 displayed prices and actual prices \u2014 a box of rice actually costing $1.29 but displayed at $5.16, four times as much, would yield a 4 card, for example. And if they identified the item with the correct price displayed, they\u2019d get an ace card worth either 1 or 11.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Price is Right - Another Bad Rarity in Hit Me\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WYVBIhOFAGM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRetired because it became \u2018too complicated\u2019 for some people. It\u2019s fourth grade math based on blackjack,\u201d said Reddit user rick420buzz. User scream4ever added, \u201cYeah, if you knew what you were doing, you were guaranteed to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h2>Hurdles<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>This game featured a product with a displayed price represented as hurdler character. At each of three hurdles, a contestant would have to correctly guess which of two other products was cheaper than the original product to keep the hurdler progressing toward the finish line. (And the contestant would fire a starter pistol to get the action started!)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Price is Right - Hurdles\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bT7HIYn0T1s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHurdles could have become legendary like Cliff Hangers with the little character moving around,\u201d bluegambit875 opined on Reddit. \u201cI can see how it became too undependable with the mechanics of the set, but the concept was solid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h2>Penny Ante<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Compared to other pricing games, this one was simple: Contestants were given three oversized pennies and presented with two products, each with four possible prices displayed. Each time a contestant named a wrong price for a product, Barker would take a penny from them. And if they identified the correct prices with at least one penny left, they\u2019d win.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Price is Right - Penny Ante Stinks\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B3JwnBii0Ag?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Penny Ante lasted decades in the <em>Price Is Right<\/em> rotation, despite mechanical glitches, but it was reportedly retired after the game board was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameshowforum.org\/index.php\/topic,2522.msg21864.html?PHPSESSID=a90e34a295f77a31e50c043c7f0b20e1#msg21864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accidentally left out in the rain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><h2>The Phone Home Game<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>In this game, a contestant would collaborate via telephone with someone playing from home. The at-home contestant would have a list of seven items and their prices, but they could only say the prices of only three items, and the in-studio contestant would have to identify the product that went with each dollar amount. After three tries, the prize money was revealed, and the players would split their earnings.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vintage Pricing Game -- Phone Home Game -- The Price is Right\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IdMzzbgOBII?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honestly surprised they haven\u2019t brought The Phone Home Game out of cold storage,\u201d MndnMove_69982004 wrote on Reddit. \u201cThat could be brought back as The Skype Game or something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h2>Super Ball!!<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Yes, two exclamation points! This game had contestants guessing the price of three prize items. For each correct guess, they\u2019d get a shot at winning that prize through a Skee-Ball-like challenge. Then, if they guessed the price of a fourth item, they\u2019d get the Super Ball. And if they sunk the Super Ball in the \u201cWIN\u201d hole, they\u2019d win all the prizes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Is Contestant James Too Strong For Super Ball? Find Out! - The Price Is Right 1984\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KslUID5DCJc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss Super Ball, but more for the sentimental entertainment value of playing high-stakes Skee-Ball,\u201d wrote Jcs290. (And we\u2019d give a shout-out to James, the contestant in the YouTube clip above, who explained to Barker he worked in a toilet paper factory seven days a week to \u201ckeep America wiping\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><h2>Trader Bob<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>This game was relatively straightforward: Contestants started with one product and then had to pick one item from three other pairs of products, and they would win if each selection was more expensive than the last.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Price is Right - Trader Bob - September 1985\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VbHbW4A7QSs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Trader Bob had a decent setup,\u201d bluegambit875 said. \u201cBut it was complicated, production-wise, with all three models busy \u2026 criss-crossing the stage to move those podiums. I think there was room to simplify the game to keep it moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h2>Walk of Fame<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>In this Walk of Fame, players had to guess the retail price of increasingly expensive prize items with increasingly wide margins of error. If they guessed a price outside of the range for one item, they\u2019d draw a <em>Price Is Right<\/em> autograph book from a stack as a consolation prize.
