It\u2019s been about three and a half years since\u00a0Prodigal Son<\/em><\/a> was canceled, and we still think it deserved at least another season to wrap up that\u00a0wild<\/em> cliffhanger<\/a>. No, seriously, we can talk about this show for hours. And so when Dermot Mulroney<\/a>, who had a\u00a0killer arc at the end of the first season<\/a> as Nicholas Endicott, stopped by TV Insider\u2019s New York office to chat about his newest role playing the new chief<\/a> on\u00a0Chicago Fire<\/em><\/a>, we had to ask him about his bloody ending<\/a> on the short-lived Fox drama.<\/p>\n

That was \u201ca very well-written character,\u201d Mulroney recalled. \u201cThat show really caught people. It\u2019s such a shame it didn\u2019t continue because people were crazy about it. They still are, they\u2019re rewatching it, of course. But they had set up so much for him.\u201d Due to the pandemic and filming the end of Season 1 out of order, a couple of episodes weren\u2019t able to be filmed which would have explored Nicholas and Jessica\u2019s (Bellamy Young<\/a>) relationship \u201cas being something where it\u2019s almost like a romantic comedy,\u201d executive producer Chris Fedak<\/a> told us at the time.<\/p>\n

That was news to Mulroney, who recalled filming right up to the shutdown. \u201cMy understanding is that I had the same ending. They just compressed it because they had to hustle up and combine episodes and eliminate one or two just to get to that end zone,\u201d he shared before raving about that ending: Ainsley (Halston Sage<\/a>) killing him after all season Martin (Michael Sheen<\/a>) had been focused on Malcolm (Tom Payne<\/a>) possibly following in his murderous footsteps. That all led to that \u201cmy girl\u201d moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cChanges it up at the end because she completely eviscerates me,\u201d Mulroney said of the \u201cgruesome\u201d scene for which a lot had to be taken into consideration. \u201cThey were worried about blood on the carpet of the set because we have to shoot there later. The clock was ticking, we were masked, and there were screens and gloves and everything on that set. It was a scramble to do it. So it was mayhem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mulroney also played the cello for\u00a0Prodigal Son<\/em>, and he praised the show\u2019s composer Tim Perrine. While he wasn\u2019t present in Season 2, he recalls that Endicott was mentioned \u201cendlessly,\u201d as he put it. \u201cI kept hearing from friends, \u2018Why aren\u2019t you on the show?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Something he particularly enjoyed about being part of\u00a0Prodigal Son<\/em> was working with Lou Diamond Phillips<\/a> (who played Gil); they previously starred together in Young Guns<\/em>. \u201cTo watch him work\u2026 He\u2019s a brilliant actor and has all sorts of other qualities on the set, would take too long to explain, but that was amazing to see him again.\u201d<\/p>\n
