(Contributed Photo)\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<br \/>\nWith over 180 children registered, an average of 130 attended session one of the \u201cFizz Boom Read\u201d 2014 Collaborative Reading Program from June 24 to July 8 at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.<\/p>\n<p>Children\u2019s activities included \u201cRead Aloud and Crafts\u201d on Tuesdays, Computer Day on Wednesday, Special Guest Day on Thursday, and Friday Movie Day and Reading Challenge where children who read at least 10 books receive an incentive from one of the program\u2019s sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>Computer research skills were honed as children played scavenger hunts on subscription database EBSCO. Children were also treated to guests like Lulu the Canario and Primo the Fish who gave the children gifts courtesy of the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Onni of the Division of Fish and Wildlife taught the children of the importance of preventing brown tree snakes from multiplying on island. Onni presented children with an actual snake and allowed them to touch it. <\/p>\n<p>Anne Yamada read Brown Bear, Brown, What Do You See? by Bill Martin to the children on top of teaching them signs for the different colors and the alphabet.<\/p>\n<p>The children took a short field trip to the Guma Hustisia and toured the courthouse, where they met Associate Judge Joseph Camacho, asked him questions, and touched his gavel. They also got to sit in on live court proceedings.<\/p>\n<p> The children received free food during the summer program\u2019s last week, courtesy of PSS\u2019 Food and Nutrition Program.<\/p>\n<p>JKPL wants to reach out to children ages 6-12 who weren\u2019t able to attend the program at the library, and JKPL will bring the program closer to children who weren\u2019t able to attend the program at the library due to the location.
