{"id":42938,"date":"2014-07-22T04:00:56","date_gmt":"2014-07-21T18:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=42938"},"modified":"2014-07-22T04:00:56","modified_gmt":"2014-07-21T18:00:56","slug":"nmti-reaches-pss-education-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/nmti-reaches-pss-education-board\/","title":{"rendered":"NMTI reaches out to PSS and Education Board"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Agnes McPhetres, CEO of the Northern Marianas Technical Institute, reached out to the Public School System\u2019s Board of Education last Friday and asked for its help in completing \u201c a true educational circle\u201d within the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been appointed as the CEO for NMTI for at least one year, and I\u2019m working to look and review this institute as a very valuable institute in our overall educational system in the CNMI,\u201d McPhetres told the board.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, McPhetres described the concept of an education circle as one that sees the educational institutions of the Commonwealth as linked\u2014with PSS, the Northern Marinas College, and NMTI working together to build a better workforce and community. <\/p>\n<p>McPhetres pointed out that as NMC moves to expand its four-year degree programs, it has also chosen to abandon developing its vocational training program.<\/p>\n<p>She said she understands the college\u2019s decision, but now it creates a gap within the community\u2019s education needs. However, she said NMTI can rise to \u201cfill the gaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McPhetres also shared with the board NMTI\u2019s plan to transform itself into a charter school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Legislature is looking to make [NMTI] a charter school for technical education, which will clarify the nebulousness of utilizing public funds in a private school,\u201d McPhetres said.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, a charter school can receive assistance from both local and federal sources.<\/p>\n<p>Board chair Herman Guerrero offered his support to McPhetres. \u201cWe\u2019ll encourage [Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan] to work closely [with NMTI].
