According to NSHSS scholarship director Susan Thurman, Manglona and Javier were accepted into the prestigious society because of their \u201coutstanding academic achievement at Mount Carmel School.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43288\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43288\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cathryn-Javier.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-43288\" alt=\"Javier\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Cathryn-Javier-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Javier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43286\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/thomas-manglona.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-43286\" alt=\"Manglona\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/thomas-manglona-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manglona<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While outstanding in the classroom, Manglona and Javier have also been very successful in extracurricular activities. Active in numerous organizations, Manglona has established himself as a notable journalist in the CNMI and has led his school\u2019s Journalism Club to cover stories in both print and video, including the club\u2019s notable Knightly News broadcast program. Recently, Manglona represented the CNMI in the National Forensics League national competition and completed his summer studies at Stanford University as part of the Junior Statesmen of American program.<\/p>\n<p>For her part, Javier has been active in forensic competitions, the National Honor Society, Mock Trial and the school\u2019s Theatre Club. In her first year as a high school Mock Trial attorney, Javier won an award for Best Attorney at the CNMI High School Mock Trial Competition. This past year, she also completed distance education courses online and took the AP US History exam as a sophomore, a test normally taken by high school juniors.<\/p>\n<p>Mount Carmel School president Galvin Deleon Guerrero was not surprised when he heard about their acceptance into the NSHSS. He said, \u201cThese are two of our finest Knights who epitomize the school\u2019s trademark values of faith, excellence, and success, so I think it is very fitting that they be recognized this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As members of the NSHSS, Javier and Manglona join a select group of students who have distinguished themselves with their academic excellence.
