{"id":44938,"date":"1998-12-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1998-12-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/93edf8c9-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"1998-12-28T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"1998-12-28T00:00:00","slug":"93edf8e2-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/93edf8e2-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Tanker owner pays for reef wreck"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Division of Environmental Quality announced last week the payment of $100,000 by Inter Bulk Shipping Inc., owner of the oil tanker M\/T Shogun, which ran aground near Rota&#8217;s West Harbor last year.<\/p>\n<p>The payment was part of a settlement agreement reached between the company and DEQ, the Coastal Resources Management Office and the Municipality of Rota and to be used for environmental programs in Rota, Saipan and Tinian.<\/p>\n<p>The Shogun spilled approximately 800 gallons of bunker fuel into Rota&#8217;s waters in Nov. 6, 1997, damaging the coral reel near the harbor&#8217;s entrance.<\/p>\n<p>According to a preliminary damage assessment report prepared after the incident, a reef measuring 184 x 50 feet in Rota&#8217;s industrial harbor was severely damaged.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, DEQ found that contaminants in the bunker oil from the vessel exceeded regulatory levels and the oil is subject to hazardous waste regulations.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, DEQ and CRMO issued civil penalties for the infractions.<\/p>\n<p>IBS agreed to settlement terms last month after considering DEQ&#8217;s hazardous waste determinations.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the settlement, IBS will dispose of all the contaminated oil currently being stored in Rota and decontaminate the tanker trucks that are being used for oil storage.<\/p>\n<p>The disposal and decontamination will be done in compliance with appropriate CNMI and federal regulations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Division of Environmental Quality announced last week the payment of $100,000 by Inter Bulk Shipping Inc., owner of the oil tanker M\/T Shogun, which ran aground near Rota&#8217;s West Harbor last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-44938","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44938","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=44938"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44938\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44938"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=44938"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=44938"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
