Saipan Chamber of Commerce president Kerry M. Deets has vowed to help the CNMI government stave off federal takeover and help the local leaders develop the island’s economy.<\/p>\n
Deets, who was sworn as Chamber head Saturday evening, said she will keep the communication line with CNMI leaders open and encourage them to pass legislations which will help stimulate investments in the Northern Marianas.<\/p>\n
Immediately, Deets said she will address the three-year limit imposed on the stay of non-resident workers to the island which the Chamber has strongly criticized since it will paralyze many businesses at the time when many are already suffering due to the Asian financial crisis. The controversial measure has been passed by the
\nHouse of Represenatives and the Senate last year. It is scheduled to be signed by Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio.<\/p>\n
As the Asian economic woes batter the CNMI’s tourism economy, many business on the island have closed shop resulting in the decline of government revenues.<\/p>\n
Deets believes that the slowdown in economy will remain until the year 2000 , thus the government has no other choice but to continue carrying out various cost-cutting measures.<\/p>\n
Since 1999 will still be a difficult year for the Northern Marianas, she encouraged members of the Chamber to actively participate in helping implement positive changes that will enhance the island’s social and economic conditions.<\/p>\n
As Chamber head, Deets will serve as member of the CNMI panel in the 902 consultations, co-chair of the governor’s economic recovery and revitalization task force sub committee on finance and technology.<\/p>\n
Deets lamented the negative effect of the $1 billion lawsuit filed by garment workers against manufacturers and suppliers on the image of the Northern Marianas.<\/p>\n
She said the lawsuit and the renewed attacks of the Department of Interior are all part of an orchestrated move to undermine the progress made by the administration in solving the problems in connection with labor and immigration.<\/p>\n
The CNMI, she noted, has carried out raids in factories for the past months to ensure that illegal workers are not employed and the living conditions with the OSHA standards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
