Lucy Blanco Maratita has recently joined the elite group of local women who are lawyers.<\/p>\n
Her entry to the Attorney General’s Office earns recognition and celebration from the local community.<\/p>\n
“My being a Chamorro helps in terms of understanding the culture, customs, traditions and being able to relate with people who are from the islands,” she said.<\/p>\n
She took the challenge to join the few who ventured into the legal profession after her stint with the Mayor’s office of Tinian. Although, she had a degree in communications, she saw the void a decade ago when Tinian was in the process of deciding for its future.<\/p>\n
“The people just approved the casino and I saw the big need for somebody from our local community to be able to help,” she added.<\/p>\n
By that time, she was already starting a family with David Maratita but decided anyway to pursue her dream.<\/p>\n
She brought along her two kids and embarked on a five-year study in the mainland leading to her completion of the law degree.<\/p>\n
“I had my children all along. The reason why I did that was I decided that first I am mother and second I’m a law student. I wanted to make sure that I remember that,” she said.<\/p>\n
Striking a balance between both demanding roles was not easy. But Maratita knew by heart that she’s going to make it.<\/p>\n
“It’s all a matter of discipline, time management and a lot of hard work,” according to Maratita as met relatives and friends during her oath taking ceremony at the Supreme Court Hall in Susupe last Friday.<\/p>\n
While both young and old took time out to greet her, she feels an important role to fulfill aside from her commitment on the legal aspect of her job.<\/p>\n
“This is a better time to be a role model for other local girls or anybody from the island to continue their education. They should somehow equip themselves with whatever skills to conduct and contribute to the community,” she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
