Santos said her office has received the EAP billing for Spring and is due to transmit the payment this month.

This will assure both the students and the college that EAP money is forthcoming after the government expressed uncertainty over its funding.

The EAP billing for spring is a reduced amount compared to previous semesters. Last fall semester alone, NMC received $570,000 for EAP. After the government directed recipients to first explore federal grants before seeking local assistance, the dependency for EAP has been reduced.

For NMC, its Board of Regents has adopted a new policy to govern the local grant. Students who are without federal grant and are carrying less than 12 credits will receive $90 for each credit. While those who have 12 to 15 credits will get $1,000 for the entire semester, and $1,100 for students carrying more than 15 credits.

Students who are also recipients of Pell grant will only get $40 for each credit. Pell grant scholars each received $2,700 last year. It was expected to increase to $3,000 this year.

The policy was designed to meet the needs of its students. Based on the survey conducted last March, students did not agree to the full-time credit requirement for the EAP money. Majority of the students enrolled at NMC have either families or are working while studying.

While EAP money for Spring is available, local grant for summer is still suspended.

The CNMI Scholarship Office is scheduled to transmit over $200,000 to the Northern Marianas College to cover the educational assistance grant for the Spring term.

[4

post-46847","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news
["GET
