{"id":47040,"date":"1999-06-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1999-06-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/94cb0733-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"1999-06-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"1999-06-22T00:00:00","slug":"94cb0743-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/94cb0743-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"PACIFIC BRIEFS\n\nUnderwood stopped from\nspeaking in Guam Legislature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Underwood stopped from<br \/>\nspeaking in Guam Legislature<\/p>\n<p>Guam&#8217;s delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Robert Underwood, has expressed dismay at being prevented from presenting his annual State of Guam&#8217;s Agenda in Washington before the island&#8217;s Legislature.<\/p>\n<p>Underwood was told by the Speaker of the Legislature that the reason for the decision was to save $ 2,000.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the Congressman said, &#8220;I&#8217;m very disappointed that the Speaker has seen fit to put a price on communication between me and the people of Guam.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Underwood noted that more than $ 2,000 was spent on food caterers, floral arrangements, invitations and other expenses related to the opening of the current Guam legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the speech is important enough to continue,&#8221; Underwood said, &#8220;I will explore other options, including working with the University of Guam,&#8221; to present a public accounting of Guam&#8217;s work in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Security issues up in<br \/>\nHonolulu conference<\/p>\n<p>A conference on Pacific Island security issues will take place Tuesday, June 22 through Thursday, June 24 in Honolulu, Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting sessions will focus on Pacific Island countries&#8217; perspectives on security, including defense cooperation and other security relationships with regional nations and the major world powers.<\/p>\n<p>The high-level conference will bring together approximately 150 senior policy makers, defense officials and academics from throughout the Pacific Islands and Asian regions and the mainland U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsor of the three-day conference is the Waikiki-based Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speaker will be Admiral Dennis Blair, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Area Command.<\/p>\n<p>Among those scheduled to speak at other sessions are U.S. Congressmen Eni Faleomavaega from American Samoa and Robert Underwood from Guam; John Wasi of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Relations in the Solomon Islands; Peleni Talagi of the Niue Office of the Attorney General; and Toni Fonokalafi of the Tonga Defense Services.<\/p>\n<p>The Director of the Pacific Islands Development Program at the East-West Center, Dr. Sitiveni Halapua will chair a Wednesday session on &#8220;The Pacific Islands and the Major Powers.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guam&#8217;s delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Robert Underwood, has expressed dismay at being prevented from presenting his annual State of Guam&#8217;s Agenda in Washington before the island&#8217;s Legislature.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-47040","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/47040","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=47040"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/47040\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=47040"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=47040"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=47040"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
