Cabrera.

The event continues Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and wraps up Sunday, also from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Sponsored by DEQ and the US Environmental Protection Agency, the event will accept a variety of hazardous waste items: used motor oil, cooking oil, coolants, paint, varnish, stains, thinners, expired pesticides (non-aerosol type), muriatic and hydrochloric acids, automobile and marine batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, dry cell batteries, spray paint cans, and fluorescent light bulbs (straight type only).

“These items are particularly hazardous to the environment,” explained Cabrera. “Even if they are properly disposed in the Puerto Rico dump, it is much better to recycle them and remove them from our fragile island environment.”

The Na Gatbo Marianas event, which means Keep the Marianas Beautiful, targets household waste only; no items from island businesses or government agencies will be accepted.

DEQ is asking people to bring their household hazardous waste items to the collection site located in the vacant lot north of the Army Reserve Center in Puerto Rico. As a safety measure, people should enter the site from Beach Road should an unexpectedly long line of automobiles form.

For more information, call DEQ at 664-8500 or 664-8501.

[4

post-47516","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news
["GET
