{"id":47718,"date":"1999-08-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1999-08-17T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/94ddcc5d-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"1999-08-17T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"1999-08-17T00:00:00","slug":"94ddcc71-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/94ddcc71-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Election board seeks passage of\nbill allowing registration by mail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Board of Elections is urging the Legislature to pass the election reform bill that would allow off-island citizens to register by mail.<\/p>\n<p>The elections board started allowing registration by mail earlier, but discontinued the system recently following the Office of Attorney General&#8217;s issuance of an opinion that said such practice was not permitted by the Commonwealth law.<\/p>\n<p>Carlos Camacho, president of the Democratic Party, wrote to the board&#8217;s executive director, Gregorio C. Sablan, last week questioning the discontinuity of registration by mail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I strongly feel that this decision does a great injustice to the disenfranchised citizens,&#8221; Camacho said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To disallow citizens, who are absent from the Commonwealth because of educational, medical, employment, military duty of other requirements, to register by mail means to deny them the right to vote,&#8221; Camacho added.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that most of these prospective voters are &#8220;first time voters who have just attained, or will be attaining on the date of the election, their voting age, as well as those who may have never before registered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sablan described the board&#8217;s decision as &#8220;regrettable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Sablan said, he relies on the Legislature&#8217;s positive action on House Bill 11-115, which would make it legal to conduct off-island registration by mail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Until the law is changed, there is very little else we could do,&#8221; Sablan said, as he called on the Democratic Party to &#8220;join us in urging the legislature to enact this election reform legislation into law.&#8221; (MCM)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Board of Elections is urging the Legislature to pass the election reform bill that would allow off-island citizens to register by mail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-47718","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/47718","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=47718"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/47718\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=47718"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=47718"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=47718"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
