The Board of Elections yesterday urged all political parties to submit their nominating petitions for candidates on or before Sept. 22, the deadline for filing of candidacy.<\/p>\n
BOE Executive Director Greg Sablan said the board is scheduled to meet on Sept. 29 and 30 to review and certify the nominating petitions.<\/p>\n
Sablan said two independent candidates, both racing for the Precinct 4 seats at the House of Representatives, have filed their petitions with the board. BOE has certified Benigno M. Sablan’s petition. The other candidate, Justo Quitugua, filed his petition yesterday.<\/p>\n
Three political parties, aside from the independent bloc, will jostle for the positions at stake in the Nov. 6 mid-term elections.<\/p>\n
Reform Party, headed by former Gov. Froilan C. Tenorio, provides additional color to the political landscape traditionally dominated by Republicans and Democrats.<\/p>\n
Also yesterday, the elections board started distributing application forms for absentee voting requests.<\/p>\n
“These applications are only for registered voters who are not here and those who are planning to leave the island before the election day,” Sablan said.<\/p>\n
Sablan said the board shipped out yesterday 306 application forms for off-island registered voters, including students who are enrolled in schools and universities outside the CNMI.<\/p>\n
The list of off-island students was provided to the board by the Scholarship Office.<\/p>\n
