September has been proclaimed as Cultural Heritage Month in efforts to promote cultural awareness among the indigenous people of the Northern Marianas as well as to boost the island’s charms to visitors and tourists.<\/p>\n
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio also signed a proclamation last Friday marking September 18 as Chief Aghurubw Day in the CNMI in recognition of the heroism of the Carolinian ancestor.<\/p>\n
Being a special celebration, next month will see of flurry of activities aimed at fostering cultural pride among islanders as it provides a framework for a variety of cultural events by different groups and individuals.<\/p>\n
According to the governor’s proclamation, it is the CNMI’s interest to promote its culture to people from other countries who are visiting the island or working here.<\/p>\n
“Our indigenous culture is part of the islands’ attractiveness and charm, so it is appropriate to set aside a particular time for displaying it,” Tenorio said.<\/p>\n
This celebration also “helps us transmit our culture to the younger generation,” he added. “This is most important because it helps preserve our precious culture.”<\/p>\n
Since the island has two indigenous peoples, Chamorro and Carolinian, the Cultural Heritage Month will have one week devoted to each group’s cultural activities.<\/p>\n
