The Senate seat vacated by Tinian Sen. Herman Manglona would be included in the coming midterm elections if the Senate leadership declares a vacancy in that position, an election official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
“We will wait for the Senate to notify us on whatever decision they would come up with regarding Sen. Manglona’s position,” said Gregorio C. Sablan, executive director of the Board of Elections.<\/p>\n
Manglona, who is facing possible corruption charges, resigned Wednesday, citing “personal reasons.”<\/p>\n
His resignation was effective immediately.<\/p>\n
Manglona is being investigated by federal authorities for allegedly taking bribe money from local businessmen during his term as mayor of Tinian.<\/p>\n
Two businessmen earlier pled guilty to bribing Manglona in exchange for contracts for CIP projects, while an aide of the senator admitted that he attempted to intimidate a juror into voting against the indictment of his boss.<\/p>\n
Manglona, who was elected senator in 1997, still has two more years into completion of his four-year term.<\/p>\n
Of the three Tinian seats in the Senate, only the position being occupied by Tinian Sen. David Cing, who is seeking reelection, is at stake at the Nov. 6 .political exercise.<\/p>\n
“If we don’t receive any call from the Senate, we would decide what to do with the vacant Tinian seat,” Sablan said. “The senators might meet this weekend or early next week to discuss that.”<\/p>\n
