{"id":48203,"date":"1999-09-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1999-09-30T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/95020c91-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"1999-09-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"1999-09-30T00:00:00","slug":"95020ca2-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/95020ca2-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Education board wants new\nhigh school project hastened"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Board of Education is seeking to start &#8220;as soon as possible&#8221; the construction of a new high school which will be built on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<p>BOE Chair Esther Fleming said the Public School System is &#8220;pressured by the existing congested conditions at Marianas High School.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We intend to proceed with the construction of the new high school in the most expeditious manner as possible,&#8221; Fleming said in a Sept. 28 letter to Public Lands Director Bertha C. Leon Guerrero.<\/p>\n<p>Fleming is asking Guerrero to provide the board with an update on the status of the Division of Public Land&#8217;s research on the 10-hectare land on Capitol Hill which PSS seeks to acquire for the high school project.<\/p>\n<p>PSS plans to build the new high school near the Governor&#8217;s Office, but the site is not one of the properties assigned to the education agency.<\/p>\n<p>PSS awaits the public lands division&#8217;s approval of the site plan.<\/p>\n<p>MHS is the only public high school on Saipan, and the continuing increase in the student population has called for the construction of a new one.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the new high school, PSS is also planning to build a new junior high school in Kagman III to help ease the student population at Hopwood Junior High School in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>The CIP Facility Specialists office of PSS earlier said that the new high school on Capitol Hill is designed to accommodate  a gymnasium as well as track and field.<\/p>\n<p>During the construction of both new schools on Saipan, PSS also plans to upgrade the facilities at Hopwood and MHS.
