Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio has sought the assistance and cooperation of the private sector in his plan to welcome the new millennium with a grand celebration aimed at drawing tourists into the Northern Marianas.<\/p>\n
So far, a proposal to light the stretch of Beach Road from the American Memorial Park to the PIC has been approved by the Marianas Visitors Authority as part of the celebration.<\/p>\n
There is no information yet on how the CNMI plans to mark the millennium on Dec. 31, although administration officials are trying to identify funding to finance other projects.<\/p>\n
According to the governor, MVA and the private sector are working very closely in mapping out such undertakings. He declined to provide specific details.<\/p>\n
“Although the economy is not that good, the private sector is very receptive in making some donations to MVA to welcome the new millennium,” Tenorio said in an interview.<\/p>\n
“The committee is encouraging the private sector, the hotels and other businesses to please do something and to show that we are welcoming the new millennium,” added the local chief executive.<\/p>\n
Likewise, he acknowledged efforts by tourism-related businesses to promote the CNMI, particularly during the celebration of the new millennium.<\/p>\n
Several tour agencies and air carriers have lined up activities to cash in on the expected influx of Japanese travelers who want to mark the milestone on the island.<\/p>\n
All Nippon Airways, for instance, will operate 10 Osaka-Saipan charter flights on Dec. 25 to Jan. 7 next year. Pacific Micronesia Tours, Inc. and Tasi Tours will handle the marketing of Saipan millennium trip.<\/p>\n
Since the government has decided to fully support these private initiatives, the governor is trying to seek ways to make the event meaningful for the visitors, but is not sure whether the local coffers can fund such celebration.<\/p>\n
“We want to work closely with the private sector because its involvement is very important in order for us to see that whatever we do is successful,” Tenorio explained.<\/p>\n
The island government has been confronted by serious cash-flow problems for the last two years due to the recession in Asia, the island’s main source of tourists and investors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
