Sixteen aspiring boxers were certified Saturday by the Saipan Health Clinic as “physically fit” to box, according to Al Taitano, president of the Saipan Amateur Boxing Organization.<\/p>\n
Taitano said the 16 were the first to be admitted to the newly formed boxing organization. Their first training session is scheduled for Nov. 28 at Kilili Beach.<\/p>\n
“They are just the first batch. I’m still extending invitations to those who are interested in boxing to come to me and fill up the applications,” Taitano said.<\/p>\n
The organization is open to young men aged between 16 and 25. The applicant must be in good health, drug-free and physically fit.<\/p>\n
“We won’t allow anybody who is not certified as physically fit to undergo training in boxing,” Taitano said.<\/p>\n
An experienced boxer from Russia will train Saipan’s amateur boxers, Taitano said.<\/p>\n
“This Russian boxer has been in the boxing arena for eight years,” Taitano said.<\/p>\n
Taitano said he does not expect to send a representative to any boxing competition in the near future.<\/p>\n
“This is just an organization of amateurs. We’re not yet dreaming of participating in big competitions,” Taitano said.<\/p>\n
If the Commonwealth decides to join any boxing competition, Taitano said he would ask his Russian trainer to represent the CNMI. (MC)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
