As I inch my way around the island, two things stand out: 1). For Rent signs can still be seen in most commercial buildings. 2). Planned hotel projects slammed by the crisis are still awfully quiet–no construction activities.

Indeed, there are commercial buildings thriving as manifested by hundreds of cars in their parking lots. Then there’s the group that are slowly dying which can also be discerned by the lack of activities inside or outside their business venues. And it isn’t hard telling which ones are making it or faking it.

Apartments equipped with better amenities have also seen a reduction in their tenants who have opted to seek for more affordable ones. And even those who have moved to humbler settings have asked for breaks in their monthly dues. Those in commercial buildings whose business have hit rock bottom have given the keys to the landlord saying “we can’t afford your rate at this juncture”. Compassionate landlords have reciprocated with “we’ll take whatever you can afford”.

Business has really bogged down to a fearful screeching halt. Most small businesses have seriously considered shutting down altogether. The big ones are quizzing what other strangling laws are in store for them as they close out the year. It’s troubling, right?

Yuletide’s gusty trade winds

It’s that time of year when the trade winds gusts up to 25 miles per hour and a bit cool for our brown skin. It’s actually very nice weather permitting utility consumers island-wide to turn down thermostats or they’d be chancing hypothermia.

The gusty Yuletide wind isn’t all good tidings for farmers throughout farm fields. At 15 to 25 miles per hour, it’s time to harvest bananas before they’re slammed into waste by fairly strong winds.

For fishermen, the choppy seas whipped up at this time of year isn’t good tidings either. White caps tell it all–stay in port–or a fishing trip would be a waste, too. It’s the spawning season and the catch won’t be the usual big ones we’re used to like other time of the receding year.

It’s also the sinusitis season where dusts and pollen in the air viciously assault soft sinus tissues in our noses. Sooner than later, we’d be wiping our nostrils or trying to block a sneeze often unsuccessfully. What a way to start out the holiday season but it’s the usual dosage that the trade winds whip up at this time of year.

Parents with kids who have had bouts with pneumonia must carefully tread the condition of their children to ensure that they don’t contract this deadly affliction out of neglect. If they are not vitamin-c intolerant, give them lots of citrus fruits to combat contracting cold. But be sure that you discuss this with your family physician first before heading to counters to buy vitamin-c supplements.

That it is also the flu season, families with elderly at home should also watch after the older folks’ condition. If per chance they catch cold or flu, your best bet is to bring him or her to the clinic (private or local hospital) to see a physician. It’s important that we take preventive measure given that as we age, our immunity system equally declines.

If anything, the gusty trade winds of the Yuletide season cools the temperament of the short-fused bunch. It grants them the opportunity to be tolerant of explosive situations. Most importantly, they get the rare chance to slow down and smell the roses. Take your time, it’s not the end of the world. Enjoy graceful moments with your family and friends. You owe it to yourself!

I’d volunteer to take photos for the paper on days when my schedule is a bit slow.
