{"id":49286,"date":"1999-12-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1999-12-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/954954a2-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"1999-12-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"1999-12-22T00:00:00","slug":"954954b3-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/954954b3-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"SGMA extends holiday cheer\nto community organizations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Saipan Garment Manufacturer&#8217;s Association got into the spirit of giving this holiday week through three separate donations for the betterment of the community.<\/p>\n<p>SGMA made a donation to Karidat, the social service organization that assists the needy, the Safe &#038; Sober Foundation, which aims to reduce drunk &#038; drugged driving on CNMI roads, and to the holiday lighting along Beach Road.<\/p>\n<p>In its sixth year of annual donations to Karidat, SGMA Executive Director Richard A. Pierce presented a $2,500 check to Karidat Executive Director Angie Guerrero for the agency&#8217;s general operations.<\/p>\n<p>The non-profit organization performs a myriad of services for the community, including crisis intervention, counseling to crime victims &#038; troubled youths, and providing emergency food, shelter, &#038; information to crime victims and nonresident workers.<\/p>\n<p>SGMA also made a $1,000 donation to the Safe &#038; Sober Foundation, which will help the organization (and Santa) bring candy and holiday cheer to the children of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.<\/p>\n<p>Safe &#038; Sober is spearheaded by the CNMI Department of Public Safety and implements educational programs and conducts crime prevention activities to help reduce drunk and drugged driving on CNMI roads.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, SGMA contributed $2,500 to the Marianas Visitors Authority to sponsor a light sculpture in the image of a coconut tree, part of First Lady Sophie Tenorio&#8217;s millennium lighting project along Saipan&#8217;s Beach Road pathway.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were happy to help out each of these organizations,&#8221; said Mr. Pierce. &#8220;The lights along Beach Road look wonderful, and we&#8217;re hoping our gifts to Karidat and Safe &#038; Sober help these organizations shine brightly as well, by doing some good for the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>SGMA represents 32 of the island&#8217;s 34 garment factories.
