During Spring 1999 student teacher Velma De Leon Guerrero and Debra M. Whitt, a master teacher at the College Lab School, approached the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and signed up to adopt a public beach to clean.  Based on the availability of beaches, class size and enrollment of the College Lab School, Ladder Beach was selected.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ms. Whitt, &#8220;The upper grades (fourth and fifth) along with their teachers and supportive parents were more than happy to continue the beach clean up this school year!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In school years to come, the Lab School hopes to continue the tradition of caring for our environment.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, April 26th, DEQ representatives presented a plaque to the College Lab School students for their dedication and outstanding contribution in keeping our environment clean.<\/p>\n<p>The students and teachers hope to inspire  others to do the same!<\/p>\n<p>Frank Tudela, overall chair of Environmental Awareness Week; Glenn Arriola, Environmental Awareness Sub-Committee chairman of the Adopt-A-Beach Program; and Kevin Castro, public information officer of DEQ, presented the Recognition Plaque to the NMC School of Education College Lab School students:<\/p>\n<p>Nate Algaier\t\tJackie Lizama<\/p>\n<p>Angus Bowie\t\tJonathan Mafnas<\/p>\n<p>Heather Calderwood\t\tP.W.
