The event will be held in Saipan on Nov. 10, 2000.

All former Marines are invited to this night of shared memories, and to pay honor to their Corps. They are requested to contact Captain Joe Childs, USMC retired, or Maj. Ron Mandell for details. Joe may be reached at cell phone 483-1775, work phone 235-4888, or E-mail: Marine@gte.net. Ron can be reached at E-mail: Ronmandell@hotmail.com.

The long, proud and glorious history of the United Marine Corps dates from Nov. 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress first authorized two battalions of Marines to be raised to serve aboard American ships of war. The first recruitment was conducted at Tunn Tavern, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Every year since then U.S. Marines stationed the world over, afloat and on shore, during war and in peace, have celebrated the Marine Corps Birthday every Nov. 10th.

U.S. Marines have served with distinction in every war and conflict the United States has been involved in. Over this period, they have repeatedly earned the reputation of being the “First to Fight”. Along with this reputation have come a number of nicknames. among these Leatherneck (taken from the high leather collars first worn by Marines to deflect saber cuts), Devil Dogs (given to Maines by the Germans during World War I as a result of their fighting ability), and Jarheads (reportedly as a result of their very high, short haircuts).

Plans are underway for celebration of the 225th Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps.
