To mark a month-long Arbor Month celebration in October, the Department of Lands and Natural Resources will be giving away $6,000 worth of plant vouchers in efforts to encourage the public to plant trees.<\/p>\n
The department will be issuing 300 vouchers worth $20 each, limited to one per household to ensure that more families benefit from the once in a year offer.<\/p>\n
“This means that every household now has more chances to avail of the vouchers,” said Marianne C. Teregeyo, DLNR special assistant for correspondence.<\/p>\n
The Division of Agriculture in previous years only made available 150 vouchers that entitled each recipient family to purchase $40 worth of plants.<\/p>\n
Availed on a first-come-first-serve basis starting Oct. 1, interested parties can acquire and redeem their vouchers at the division’s two nurseries located in Kagman and other participating private nurseries.<\/p>\n
“What we encourage is that each family take home as much plants as they can. This is an opportunity for them to save a relatively huge amount on fruit trees. Like the governor, we also encourage residents to choose fruit trees because it bears fruits that families can consume,” said Ms. Teregeyo.<\/p>\n
“We are encouraging everybody to plant trees not just during Arbor Month, but every month all year round,” she added.<\/p>\n
Tree planting activities will be slated all throughout next month with a kick-off ceremony scheduled on Oct. 1 at the new Kagman Elementary School.<\/p>\n
The first tree among hundreds of trees to be planted will be done by Governor Pedro P. Tenorio. Similar activities will follow around CNMI schools.<\/p>\n
Arbor Day is celebrated annually in the United States and throughout the world, an annual tradition which the Commonwealth adopted in 1989.<\/p>\n
