Members of the Council of Parent-Teacher Association deferred a motion to hold yesterday elections for its new set of officers during the group’s reorganizational meeting at the Pacific Gardenia as demanded by a popular vote rendered by the quorum.<\/p>\n
The council has reset the elections for the new chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer, public relations officer and auditor to Jan. 18, 2001 before the organization’s Jan. 25th regular meeting.<\/p>\n
A nomination committee within the organization has been formed to establish a set of criteria for aspiring candidates who have yet to be named during election day.<\/p>\n
Council members noted a good turnout during yesterday’s PTA assembly, drawing parents and teachers across Saipan, Rota and Tinian.<\/p>\n
“We look forward to a positive new leadership to guide all members this coming year. I applaud all members for their interest to revive the council,” said Board of Education Vice Chair Roman Benavente.<\/p>\n
Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos, guest speaker at yesterday’s event, encouraged the group to push through with its plans to develop character development in schools.<\/p>\n
“We need to look at our roles collectively in terms of setting a good example for our children in schools as well as in the homes. No matter how book-smart one is, education is not complete unless one knows how to respect and be a supportive member of society,” Dr. Inos reminded PTA members.<\/p>\n
The commissioner also called for more solidarity among PTA and PSS leaderships in future projects.<\/p>\n
“This is a crucial aspect that will navigate and help us move along the character development curriculum that embraces the PTA’s ideals, the PSS mandate, the American democracy and the universal system of teaching and learning opportunities for our children,” she added.
