{"id":55894,"date":"2001-01-31T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2001-01-31T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/96aea7e4-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2001-01-31T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2001-01-31T00:00:00","slug":"96aea7f5-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/96aea7f5-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia reef oil drilling on hold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BRISBANE, Australia (AP) \u2014 Plans to search for oil close to Australia&#8217;s treasured Great Barrier Reef have been put on hold because of fears that it could threaten endangered whale species, the government said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Perth-based Norwegian oil company subsidiary TGS-NOPEC had lodged an application to conduct seismic tests 30 miles from the world heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill said that although the testing would not damage the reef, it could harm whales such as the humpback, which migrate along Australia&#8217;s eastern coast each year.<\/p>\n<p>Documentation provided by the company did not provide enough data on the potential impact on whales, Hill said.
