Veterans yesterday paid tribute to war heroes and comrades of World War II in a simple ceremony held at the American Memorial Park’s Court of Honor.<\/p>\n
Chartered by Continental Airlines, the veterans arrived on Saipan to participate in the historic visit ceremony graced by Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio and other local government officials.<\/p>\n
The governor expressed his appreciation to war veterans who fought the battle and restore the US freedom.<\/p>\n
Ret. Lt. Gen. Lawrence Snowden of US Marine Corps said it was their privilege to serve the Commonwealth and liberate the territory from the Imperial Japanese.<\/p>\n
“It was our pride to come back and to express appreciation to all of you for keeping that freedom,” Mr. Snowden said in his remarks.<\/p>\n
The group is part of the 200 war veterans chartered by Continental Airlines to participate in the 56th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima from March 9-16.<\/p>\n
The veterans, family members, historians, and educators are bound for Iwo Jima, Japan to visit historical points of interest on Guam, Saipan, and Tinian.<\/p>\n
The tour is being coordinated by Military Historical Tour in Alexandria, Virginia and participants traveled from throughout the US to Guam.<\/p>\n
The group will leave Guam for Iwo Jima today to commemorate the sacrifices of American servicemen and Japanese Imperial soldiers who paid the ultimate price during the Second World War.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
