Santos reacted to the latest pedestrian fatality on March 25, where three Chinese workers from Mirage Saipan, Inc. were struck by a speeding vehicle in upper Garapan, by calling on all that are involved for more information.

With SGMA Board concurrence at a meeting held March 28, Mr. Santos has instructed to have all factories mandated to receive pedestrian safety training courses from the CNMI Department of Public Safety.

Mr. Santos stated, “This has been voluntary up until now. In our recently concluded SGMA/OSHA Safety Conference, we invited DPS to bring to our Members what they could offer us in training for pedestrian safety. DPS is willing to help us keep our workers educated. But, with this recent tragedy, it is no longer optional.”

Mr. Santos further added, “What would be doing if this were our children being run over and killed with such frequency? Would we be just going on our nonchalant way?”

The fatality victim’s company is now preparing for the transportation of the body to her family in China. Reports are that the driver identified has not been cited, although early reports had the driver at fault by witness accounts.

The victim, one of three pedestrians struck at the designated crosswalk, was just new to Saipan, and had received initial orientation by company management and was observing the CNMI law as instructed by using the crosswalk.

SGMA Chairman Gonzalo Q.
