{"id":81527,"date":"2004-06-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-06-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/9fa489b0-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2004-06-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2004-06-01T00:00:00","slug":"9fa489c1-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/9fa489c1-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Benitez, Asuncion, Mosley bag singles titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hector Benitez, Richard Asuncion, and Cameron Mosley came up with big performances yesterday and got more than waterpark passes in the 22nd Annual DFS Micronesian Tennis Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Benitez rode the momentum of his three-set win against Sonny Decena to the finals and handily beat Michael Roberts, 6-4, 6-4, to win the men\u2019s 3.0 singles championship at the Pacific Islands Club tennis courts. <\/p>\n<p>Last Sunday, Benitez loss the first set but survived a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision against Decena, who hails from Tinian.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s 4.0 singles division, Richard Asuncion validated his top seeding by besting veteran netter Elmer Guzman in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 Asuncion hurdled Richard Brostrom in the quarters, while Guzman advanced to the championship after beating Tony Santos.<\/p>\n<p>Mosley, for her part, won the women\u2019s 3.0 singles championship after finishing the round-robin draw with a superior 3-2 win-loss record. Mosley, the sister of swimming standout Nina Mosley, beat Heidi Yelin (2-2) and Jessica Black (2-3).<\/p>\n<p>In the boys 12-and-under doubles division, the Dynamic Duo of Joe Motto Jr. and Dominic Von Siebenthal took the championship after winning against the pair of Keenan Thorpe and Miguel Brostrom, 6-1, 6-2.<\/p>\n<p>Kanani Ashraf and Dinalet Jones, meanwhile, got the plum in the girls 12-and-under doubles. Ashraf and Jones played beautiful music together en route to 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory against tough challengers Vivian Lee and Lila Mailman.<\/p>\n<p>Two other singles divisions are still left undecided as of noon yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s 4.0 singles, Mayuko Arriola advanced to the finals after beating Kanani Ashraf in a marathon 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 game Sunday and then drubbed Merle Hudkins, 6-3, 6-1, yesterday. She will face No. 2 seed Cleofe Santos, who eliminated teenager Vivian Lee, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.<\/p>\n<p>Action in the men\u2019s singles open saw Jeff Race and Michael Son advancing to the finals after overcoming powerful opponents Sunday.
