{"id":81981,"date":"2004-06-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-06-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/9fc92d9d-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2004-06-18T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2004-06-18T00:00:00","slug":"9fc92dad-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/9fc92dad-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"NMI to send 200-plus delegation to Palau arts fest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The CNMI will be well represented at the upcoming Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture in Palau next month, with an expected cast of 208 artists and officials leading the way.<\/p>\n<p>Council for Arts and Culture executive director Robert Hunter said the delegation is already financially set to participate in the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe delegation has worked hard in the past months raising funds, and with the inclusion of an appropriation of funds from the Legislature, is now all set to go,\u201d he said. \u201cThe delegation has been teaching classes to the community, hosting dinner shows and dinner cruises, selling hot lunches, and also had sales at the Street Market and Flame Tree Festival, and more to raise the funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter said the delegation consists of traditional performers, which makes up the largest part of the group, a contemporary band, contemporary and traditional artists, and members of the Historic Preservation Office, Council for Humanities, and the NMI Museum.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter also disclosed that a canoe would be sailed from Saipan to Palau for the event. The expected departure of the canoe crew is set for the first week of July.<\/p>\n<p>The Festival happens every four years at different sites, depending on which country wins the bid to host the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not only the largest arts and cultural festival in the Pacific, but it is also the largest gathering in all of the Pacific,\u201d said Hunter. \u201cThe event is expected to host about 3,000 delegates and attract about 10,000 visitors. It\u2019s huge, and it\u2019s a great opportunity to us to take part in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter said the past administration put in a bid for the CNMI to host this year\u2019s event; the bid had to be pulled out due to the cost. \u201cThey didn\u2019t want the future administration to be faced with a tough task because it is very costly.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The host country must provide everything from food and lodging, to transportation for all delegations. Hunter said the former administration felt it would be a burden to the current one.
