The Division of Environmental Quality has raised the red flag on 10 beach sites on Saipan after samples collected were found to contain excessive concentrations of two fecal indicator bacteria, making them unsafe for swimming or fishing.<\/p>\n
These sites are the DPW Channel Bridge, South Puerto Rico Dump, Dai-Ichi Hotel Beach, Drainage #1, Samoa Housing Beach, Hafa Adai Hotel Beach, Drainage #2, Garapan Fishing Dock, Sugar Dock, CK District 4 Lally Beach.<\/p>\n
The DEQ statement said that concentrations of two fecal indicator bacteria\u2014fecal coliform and enterococci\u2014exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water. <\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, In order to adequately address public health concerns, DEQ has given [these] locations a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified,\u201d the DEQ statement adds.<\/p>\n
DEQ analyzes samples of marine recreational and storm drainage water from 38 locations on the Saipan\u2019s Coast. <\/p>\n
The agency also analyzed 11 water samples collected from Ma\u00f1agaha\u2019s recreational beaches and dock and none of the samples collected contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria nor did they exceed the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. <\/p>\n
\u201cDEQ assigns the sampled beach site a green flag. Enjoy our waters,\u201d the agency said.<\/p>\n
