The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board of directors has again rescheduled its election of a new chairman \u201cupon the request of Gov. Juan N. Babauta.\u201d<\/p>\n
The election had earlier been scheduled for last week, but it was put off for July 7 due to the devastation caused by Typhoon Tingting to CUC facilities.<\/p>\n
But shortly after the meeting started yesterday, CUC vice chair Francisco Guerrero moved to strike the election from the agenda, citing the agency\u2019s lack of a representative from Rota.<\/p>\n
He suggested having the election instead on July 13, Tuesday. Board member Rufina Miles seconded the motion.<\/p>\n
Another board member, Joe Torres, however questioned the motion. He noted that CUC by-laws state that the annual election be held every June.<\/p>\n
Torres added that postponing the election for lack of a Rota representative is not consistent with the manner the board has conducted elections previously.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe went ahead with the election last year without a Tinian representative,\u201d Torres said.<\/p>\n
Board member Allen Perez, who is Tinian\u2019s representative to CUC, joined the corporation only last December.<\/p>\n
Guerrero then explained that it was actually Babauta who asked to have the election postponed.<\/p>\n
The administration appoints the board members of CUC, although it is an autonomous agency.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got a call from the governor this morning and he made a request if we could defer the election. There are some things that he wants to talk to us about,\u201d Guerrero said.<\/p>\n
Board chair Herman P. Sablan expressed his support for Guerrero\u2019s motion, which also gained the affirmative votes of members Miles and Perez.<\/p>\n
Torres voted \u201cno\u201d while member Velma Ann Palacios abstained.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Sablan said he looks forward to having more time for his business, but he would be honored if he gets re-elected for another term.<\/p>\n
Sablan served as CUC board member for a year before becoming chair last year. He replaced Guerrero, who was voted instead as vice chair and chair of the CUC committee on operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
