The CNMI women\u2019s basketball team continued to blow hot and cold in the 2004 Micronesian Basketball Tournament at the University of Guam field house.<\/p>\n
A day after being drubbed by powerhouse Guam, 40-91, the girls of coach Donald Blondin kept their gold medal hopes alive yesterday after hurdling Pohnpei, 67-57.<\/p>\n
The CNMI women would now have to win their rematch against Palau this morning to advance to the gold medal round where they will probably again face Guam.<\/p>\n
Palau gave the CNMI a rude awakening on Monday, 74-44. The CNMI, however, bounced back with a victory over Chuuk Tuesday, 57-46, as the team\u2019s Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde routine continued.<\/p>\n
Guam currently leads the five-nation competition for the women with a spotless 3-0 mark, followed by Palau (2-1), the CNMI (2-2), and Pohnpei (1-3). Only Chuuk hasn\u2019t won a game in the basketball confab sporting a 0-4 record.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the Guam ladies hardly broke a sweat in blowing out the CNMI by 49 points.<\/p>\n
The U.S. territory went on a scoring binge and easily doubled the CNMI\u2019s score after the first 10 minutes of the contest, 31-15.<\/p>\n
The CNMI managed to hang on to Guam\u2019s coattails in the second quarter getting outscored by only 3 points but entered intermission down by 19, 48-29.<\/p>\n
Basketball\u2019s version of the Marianas Turkey Shootout then happened in the third as Guam went off for 24 points, while limiting the CNMI to a measly 5 points to blow the game wide open, 72-34, going into the fourth and final quarter.<\/p>\n
Guam then polished off the win by thumping the CNMI 18-7 in the payoff period.<\/p>\n
Guam\u2019s Rachel Camacho led all scorers with 24 points, while Rita-Lynn Anderson and Michelle Presnell added 18 and 17 points, respectively.<\/p>\n
The 15 points of Beverly Igitol and 10 points of Connie Camacho paced the CNMI.<\/p>\n
