The 8th Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council recently adopted a resolution commending the Environmental Interagency Cleanup Operation Team for their strong commitment toward a healthy, safe and clean environment on Saipan. <\/p>\n
The group, more commonly referred to as EICOT, has taken on several cleanup projects that aim to reduce the uncontrolled flow of contaminated waste material, carcasses, and human waste into the northern lagoon, and to rid the shoreline of broken glass and other trash.<\/p>\n
Formed in 2002, EICOT was initially composed of various government agencies such as the Coastal Resources Management Office, the divisions of Environmental Quality and Parks and Recreation; the departments of Public Health, Public Safety, Commerce and Public Works; the Marianas Visitors Authority; the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.; and the Saipan Mayor\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
The group later evolved into a multi-sectoral organization, with strong reliance on the voluntary efforts of private organizations on the island.<\/p>\n
The EICOT team is currently led by its chair, Benny K. Pangelinan, in partnership with businesses such as Mobil Marianas, Pacific Trading, CTSI Logistics, HANMI, Duty Free Shoppers Ltd., Glimpses and other supporting associations such as MOVER, POWER, BICOL, and KAMPIL.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough a collective and collaborative partnership with non-profit organizations\u2014such as MOVER president Chelita Romero; POWER president Socorro Borja; BICOL president Lito Marquez; KAMPIL president Honorio Cambronero; HANMI\u2019s B.K. Park; business partners CTSI\u2019s Rene Magalong; Pacific Trading\u2019s Charles V. Cepeda; Duty Free Shopper Ltd. president Marian Aldan-Pierce; Mobil Marianas public and government relations manager Cecilia B. Suda; Glimpses HANMI Coordinator Jojo V. Dass\u2014and their members, EICOT has helped clean up the Garapan Hotel Street of unsanitary and clogged drainage systems,\u201d reads part of the resolution.<\/p>\n
