{"id":83500,"date":"2004-08-23T06:23:00","date_gmt":"2004-08-23T06:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a0689617-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2004-08-23T06:23:00","modified_gmt":"2004-08-23T06:23:00","slug":"a068962b-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/a068962b-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire hits San Antonio building at height of Chaba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fire gutted a retail store and a tire shop in San Antonio at the height of Typhoon Chaba Monday dawn.<\/p>\n<p>Police said that based on people\u2019s accounts, the fire, which broke out at 2:13am Monday, may have been caused by a lighted candle or lantern left unattended in the building.<\/p>\n<p>Public Safety deputy commissioner Sandy Tudela said that fire personnel responded to the call but they decided to let the blaze die out by itself because the operation was extremely dangerous for personnel, given the typhoon condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur personnel were in the area and watched it closely so that it won\u2019t spread to other houses but we couldn\u2019t stop the fire because the safety of people was at stake,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said no casualties were reported in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The fire eventually died at 4 am.<\/p>\n<p>Officer Eric David of Crime Stoppers said the case remains under investigation. \u201cPolice are still looking at all angles. It\u2019s a pending investigation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Police said that the small store and the tire shop called \u201cChen Yan Horicam\u201d was recently sold to a Chinese businessman. It used to be operated by a Mr. Ceron, who is currently in Manila.<\/p>\n<p>Residents who live near the gutted shop said they did not sleep at all for fear that the fire would spread to their houses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were very tense.
