The CNMI chapter of the Motheread\/Fatheread\u00ae recently held a Motheread, Inc. Story Sharing Training at the Aqua Resort on Saipan that was participated in by 19 individuals from various agencies on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.<\/p>\n
The training, held in collaboration with the Ayuda Network and the CNMI Council for the Humanities on Aug. 14, 2004, taught participants how to use the nationally acclaimed story sharing curriculum, approach and techniques for reading to children.<\/p>\n
Staff from the Department of Youth Services, Head Start, the Public School System, the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, as well as members of the Friends of the Library and assorted reading volunteers from Saipan, Tinian and Rota participated in the interactive workshop exploring the whats, whens, whys and hows of reading to children.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was amazed to find out that children need to be read to until at least 8th grade,\u201d noted one participant, reacting to the scientific data showing that children learn vocabulary and comprehension by being read to even as they grow older and can read on their own.<\/p>\n
Two Motheread\u00ae national trainers facilitated the training held on a Saturday. Dr. Bertha Gorham and Judy Trefethan, from Motheread, Inc.\u2019s headquarters in North Carolina demonstrated extension activities and story-sharing techniques used to increase the listener\u2019s comprehension and critical thinking skills.<\/p>\n
The participants will be sharing their story sharing skills by reading in Head Start centers, during Motheread\/Fatheread\u00ae CNMI parent classes and at the library. They will also be using their skills in their jobs and at home.<\/p>\n
This training was funded by a grant from the Ayuda Network and the NMI Council for the Humanities. <\/p>\n
Motheread\/Fatheread\u00ae CNMI is currently planning to host a Motheread\u00ae Institute early next year. The three-day Institute will train participants to teach parents story-sharing techniques to use with their children at home as well as help parents improve their own literacy skills. <\/p>\n
