The Gates Millennium Scholars program has launched its 2005-2006 nomination process, giving a chance for CNMI students to be among the 1,000 recipients of the scholarship program. <\/p>\n
General information on the program, as well as the nomination forms, can be found at https:\/\/www.gmsp.org. Materials may be submitted either on-line by Jan. 14, 2005 (12 midnight EST) or postmarked no later than Jan. 14, 2005.<\/p>\n
There are three components of the GMS scholarship nomination process: <\/p>\n
(1)\tA Nominee Personal Information Form to be completed by the student; <\/p>\n
(2)\tA Nominator form to be completed by a principal, teacher, guidance counselor or other professional educator; and <\/p>\n
(3) A Recommender Form to be completed by an adult who is familiar with the nominee’s community service and leadership activities. <\/p>\n
Nominations and recommendations from relatives will not be accepted.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope to identify students with outstanding academic promise, particularly (but not exclusively) those with potential for success in the fields of mathematics, science, engineering, education or library science,\u201d a statement from the group said. <\/p>\n
Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:<\/p>\n
\u2022 are African American, American Indian\/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American;<\/p>\n
\u2022 are a citizen\/legal permanent resident or national of the United States;<\/p>\n
\u2022 have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (un-weighted);<\/p>\n
\u2022 will be entering a U.S. accredited college or university as full time, degree-seeking freshmen in the fall;<\/p>\n
\u2022 have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities; and<\/p>\n
\u2022 meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria (eligibility for Federal Pell Grant can only be determined through the submission of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to the U.S. Department of Education, Federal Student Aid Programs).<\/p>\n
Gates Millennium Scholars selects 1,000 students per year.<\/p>\n
