Stewart is a well-known author, historian, and economist and he has ties to this area. If you are a retiree and haven’t read his “Message for retirees” in Saipan Tribune, Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, please find that paper and read, read, read. He hit the nail squarely on the head. Not only our pensions but Group Health and Life Insurance are at stake. Stewart writes: “Because the NMI government decided not to participate in the U.S. Social Security System.many retirees are now particularly vulnerable once their promised retirement collapses.” He says of our people “.most will probably suffer by experiencing much reduced income and a diminished standard of living.”

We retirees cannot be passive; we cannot sit and wait for “someone to do something!” We, you and I, must do something! We must write, telephone, email, meet and talk with our senators and representatives of our Legislature to stay positive and device a plan to save the Fund, not let it fail. I’m not an economist but he is. He is trying to help us. Contact your representative. Tell them how important this is to us. It is our survival.
