The installation of street name signs on Kagman will soon become a reality after the recent arrival of about 200 sign plates, according to project contractor Meada Pacific Corp.<\/p>\n
Project manager Ricky Tabanda disclosed yesterday that signs are already being put up on various streets. Another 200 signs are expected to arrive before the end of the week.<\/p>\n
Tabanda said the Kagman portion of the street-naming project is expected to be completed \u201cbefore the end of this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the last area that we\u2019ll be working on,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter Kagman, we\u2019re going to repair street signs that are in need of repair around the island.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Tabanda, not all villages have signs on every street, including San Antonio, As Matuis, and San Roque, among others.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot all streets are in our specifications,\u201d he said. \u201cOur specifications list is not complete compared to the main plan, but the main contract is already completed. Its just the change-orders, with Kagman.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said there have already been talks with the Saipan Mayor\u2019s Office regarding putting up signs on other villages. However, a shortage of funding may be hampering the task.<\/p>\n
Tabanda said the corporation began installing street signs in September last year. The project was originally scheduled to be completed in February of this year; however, shipment and steel manufacturing problems in the mainland delayed the project.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe get all our materials from the mainland, and we\u2019ve had problems with delivery and also I think there was a problem with manufacturing of steel,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
In 1998, the CNMI Legislature passed a bill that required naming of streets and assigning of addresses on Saipan. Street naming for Saipan has been hampered by bureaucratic problems over the last 10 years and the task has yet been completed despite the creation of the commission in 1997. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
