Four Russian ballet masters and a young ballet student are now on island for the third annual staging of the Christmas classic \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d as well as for a concert slated to begin this evening at the Multi-Purpose Center.<\/p>\n
The performers hail from two different theaters in Russia: the Saratov Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet and the Perm State Theater of Opera and Ballet. They have begun rehearsals to prepare for the ballet performances, scheduled for Dec. 3, 4, and 5.<\/p>\n
Saratov\u2019s Liudmila Teleus and Daniil Kurynov and Perm State\u2019s Tatiana Bolshuhina and Nikolai Kalabine will lead over 50 students of the Glushko\u2019s Academy of Performing Arts in performances.<\/p>\n
They will also be joined by Kurynov\u2019s 11-year-old daughter, Daniela Kurynova, who will play the part of Clara in \u201cThe Nutcracker.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a big honor for us to have them here to perform with our students,\u201d ballet instructor Anna Glushko said in an interview yesterday.<\/p>\n
The performances, which will begin at 7pm, aim to bring the legacy of Russian ballet to Saipan while giving Glushko\u2019s students an opportunity to work with professional ballet dancers.<\/p>\n
She said the audience can expect this year\u2019s performance to be bigger than before, as it will involve more dances and costume changes. She added that her students, as well as their parents, are currently working as a professional ballet company in preparation for this weekend\u2019s shows.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a great experience for everybody,\u201d Glushko said.<\/p>\n
Based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffman, \u201cThe Nutcracker\u201d is a holiday fairy tale about a young German girl, Clara, who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince, a fierce battle against a Mouse King, and a journey to the enchanted Land of Snow and Land of Sweets.<\/p>\n
