USS Rushmore (LSD-47), a landing ship dock, will be joining the other two ships Dec. 30. The ships are part of Expeditionary Strike Group 5.<\/p>\n<p>Bonhoome Richard is a multi-purpose amphibious assault ship, which deployed from its homeport in San Diego Dec. 6 for a six-month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism. Known as the \u201cRevolutionary Gator,\u201d Bonhomme Richard embarks, deploys and lands elements of a Marine landing force in amphibious assault operations by helicopter, landing craft, amphibious vehicle or any combination of these means.<\/p>\n<p>Bonhomme Richard has approximately 3,000 service members. The Marine detachment makes up over half of the crew. Capt. J. Scott Jones is the ship\u2019s commanding officer.<\/p>\n<p>Duluth is home to more than 400 officers and sailors and 900 Marines.
