The University of the Philippines Alumni Association-CNMI Chapter marked its first year in the Commonwealth last December with a series of projects.<\/p>\n
Among these accomplished projects is funding the construction of two new classrooms for Calamba High School in Laguna, Philippines.<\/p>\n
This was in response to the Philippine government’s call for overseas Filipino workers to help build about 10,000 classrooms to address the country’s critical shortages in many public elementary and secondary schools, under the “Classroom Galing sa Manggagawang Pilipino” program.<\/p>\n
The classrooms’ construction is expected to begin this week.<\/p>\n
“We’ve done this project also in partnership with Mafilwa and Mr. Glicerio Arago,” said former acting president Fe Calixterio, director of the Northern Marianas College’s Adult Basic Education.<\/p>\n
Aside from taking active participation in various Filipino community activities in the islands, the UPAA also donated to various CNMI school activities, including the MathCount last year.<\/p>\n
“This year, we will again sponsor the MathCount,” said newly elected UPAA president Janet Villagomez, principal of San Vicente Elementary School.<\/p>\n
Aside from Villagomez, UPAA also elected other 2005-2006 officers during their Jan. 29 meeting at the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Nauru Building.<\/p>\n
The new vice president is Dr. Emmanuel Lleva; Aurora Sabangan of O’Connor Berman Dotts and Banes law firm was re-elected as secretary; the new assistant secretary is Orleyne Tabucanon; Gilbert Canero of City Trust Banking was re-elected treasurer; Liberty Dones of Saipan Tribune is the new auditor; and Haidee Eugenio of Marianas Variety was re-elected as public relations officer.<\/p>\n
Former UPAA president Fe Calixterio is now a member the board of advisers, along with former UPAA president Concepcion Van Der Veen, Rebecca J. Flores and Guadalupe Sabino. The next meeting will be on Feb. 26.<\/p>\n
