{"id":89656,"date":"2005-04-15T05:56:00","date_gmt":"2005-04-15T05:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a32f38a4-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e"},"modified":"2005-04-15T05:56:00","modified_gmt":"2005-04-15T05:56:00","slug":"a32f38b5-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/a32f38b5-1dfb-11e4-aedf-250bc8c9958e\/","title":{"rendered":"WWII ordnance detonated on Tinian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some 500 pounds of World War II ordnance went up in smoke yesterday after bomb experts detonated them on Tinian.<\/p>\n<p>Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric David said the detonation was safely conducted at the old Tinian quarry site.<\/p>\n<p>A team composed of the DPS\u2019 Explosives Response Team, the U.S. Navy\u2019s Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit, and the Emergency Management Office detonated the vintage ordnance.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency responders on Tinian had collected the explosives right after various sightings by community members.<\/p>\n<p>Discovery of vintage ordnance in public places has been a common event in the CNMI, which was a battleground during World War II.<\/p>\n<p>The government collects live ordnance and schedules them for detonation, since they pose a threat to public safety. The U.S. Environmental Protection also considers them a threat to the environment and public health, authorizing their disposal by detonation.
