Emergency responders rushed an 80-year-old tourist to the hospital after she nearly drowned on Managaha Island\u2019s beach Thursday morning.<\/p>\n
Police said the tourist is a Japanese woman, but Department of Public Safety spokesperson Catherine Sheu refused to confirm her identity.<\/p>\n
Sheu said yesterday that the woman was admitted to the Commonwealth Health Center for further treatment.<\/p>\n
Citing preliminary investigation report, Sheu said the woman was swimming on the beach on the western side of Managaha, a popular diving and swimming site among Japanese tourists, when an on-duty lifeguard spotted her drowning.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe on-duty life guard at the island saw the woman struggling to stay afloat in the water so he and another life guard rescued her and brought her back to shore,\u201d Sheu said.<\/p>\n
Police said the two lifeguards then transported the woman and her son to the Smiling Cove Marina. Emergency medical technicians rushed the tourist to the hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n
The incident happened about a month after two divers drowned off the Grotto, a popular diving site among tourists. A female Japanese diving instructor and a Japanese diving student reportedly got low on air while diving several meters underwater.<\/p>\n
Another incident followed days later when another Japanese woman nearly drowned while diving underwater off the Grotto. Other divers conducted CPR on the victim, who was then rushed to the hospital for treatment.
