USSP held its first bowlliards competition Monday, and a good time was had by all.<\/p>\n
Only 10 players were adventurous enough to try it the first time around, others just sat and watched.<\/p>\n
They were divided into two teams, the Chiefs and the Indians, who took turns scoring one \u201cbowling\u201d frame.<\/p>\n
Several of the players looked good in practice but got a case of the nerves with everyone watching. Welson Apaisam was the only player who didn\u2019t seem affected; as he got a spare on his first try for the Indians.<\/p>\n
The other Indians, Ron Chisato, Rick Rengiil, Rose Phillips, and Albert Gurusamy, looked like they could go all of the way, but were a little short.<\/p>\n
That was good enough to upend the Chiefs, who did just a little worse than the Indians in almost every frame. Mei Rengiil was their best performer, dropping eight points and looking like she should finish the table, but it wasn\u2019t to be.<\/p>\n
Juan Ngimak, Annie Tesiro, Ace Elameto and Mike Heston rounded out the team.<\/p>\n
To protect the guilty, the two players who didn\u2019t make a ball with two chances won\u2019t be mentioned. They\u2019ll get out of the gutter next time.<\/p>\n
Chisato said it seemed like a good way to practice getting position and running the balls.<\/p>\n
According to USSP owner Rose Phillips, that was the idea. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at challenging other bars in eight ball,\u201d she said. \u201cSome of those players are very good pool shooters.\u201d<\/p>\n
The game may seem complicated, but it\u2019s really very simple. Each player breaks a 10-ball rack, and then has two chances to run all of the balls. Anything dropped on the first chance counts as one pin and is scored like bowling. If all 10 balls are run, it\u2019s a strike. The same goes for the second chance, and if the player gets the remaining balls it\u2019s scored as a spare.<\/p>\n
