The Northern Youth Basketball Association, a new basketball association organized to develop basketball and life skills in the communities of Garapan, Navy Hill, China Town, Puerto Rico, Capitol Hill, Kagman, Tanapag, Achugao, San Roque, and As Matuis, will hold its inaugural tournament from Nov. 22 to Nov. 27.<\/p>\n
The NYBA Tournament will be divided into three divisions. Division I will be for youth 12 years old and under, Division II will be for youth 13 to 15 years old, while Division III will be for youth between the ages of 16 and 19.<\/p>\n
Deadline for registration of teams in the inaugural basketball competition is Nov. 16 and entrance fee is $100.<\/p>\n
The NYBA\u2019s goals is to provide the youth the courage to develop and create opportunities in their lives, to allow them to evaluate and make good decisions, and to have an alternative to negative behaviors and actions\u2014through the sport of basketball.<\/p>\n
To this end, a coaches meeting would be held this Friday, Nov. 4, from 8:30am to 12pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are many youth in these villages that are looking for parents and adults to help organize and coach teams. If you are interested in helping the youth of northern Saipan, even if you don\u2019t know basketball too well, you are still welcome to join the NYBA,\u201d according to the organization.<\/p>\n
The NYBA is also looking for teenage youth and adult volunteers to assist with table officiating and statistics as well as refereeing. Those interested in being part of the technical committee of the NYBA, a meeting and training session would be held also on Nov. 4, 1:30pm to 4pm, also at the Ada Gym conference room.<\/p>\n
