As the gubernatorial election approaches, members of the Saipan Rotary Club are testing their political expertise\u2014or skills of prediction\u2014by trying to forecast the election results.<\/p>\n
Led by federal government official and former Rotary Club president Jeff Schorr, local Rotarians yesterday placed their bets on the election outcome.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor a mere $1 entry fee, all monies to go to the top three most accurate predictors, you could have the satisfaction of seeing your feelings about the race justified\u2026and pick up a couple of dollars as well,\u201d Schorr tried to sell the idea to his fellow club members.<\/p>\n
Schorr said the game mechanics requires a bettor to pick the way he or she thinks the vote will go for all four candidates in terms of the vote percentage they will get.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn other words, make your best guess that candidate A will receive (for example) 40 percent of the vote; candidate B, 32 percent of the vote; candidate C, 20 percent; and that would leave candidate D with 8 percent of the vote,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The closest percentage for all four candidates will determine the winners.<\/p>\n
The winners are expected to be named by a Rotary committee in the Nov. 15 meeting.<\/p>\n
The Rotarian with closest overall accuracy wins half the pot of the entrants. The runner up wins 35 percent and the second runner up gets a consolation of 15 percent.<\/p>\n
It is a four-way race for governor in this year\u2019s election to be held Saturday, Nov. 5.<\/p>\n
The candidates are incumbent Gov. Juan N. Babauta of the Republican Party, House Speaker Benigno Fitial of the Covenant Party, former governor Froilan Tenorio of the Democratic Party, and independent candidate Rep. Heinz Hofschneider.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
